Schools are busy buildings. They withstand a lot: computer trolleys being bashed around, heavy rucksacks hitting walls and general wear and tear. They also have very small budgets for maintenance and decoration; since it is generally agreed money should be spent on education over and above paint. This is why there is a very strong case for the introduction of wall protection in every school.
Wall protection is an umbrella term for any sort of railing or panelling which is intended to protect a wall from damage from wear and tear. It is already frequently employed in hospitals (think about the bump rails protecting against bashes from patient trolleys).
If wall protection were to be introduced into every school after its next refurbishment, then thousands of pounds would be saved. The wall protection would protect new decoration without detracting from the school’s appearance. It could even be chosen in school colours to make a bold style statement.
It would seem expensive initially. And no doubt hundreds of head teachers and decision makers would be lamenting pointless spending. But then, over time, they’d see it hadn’t been pointless after all. When the money reserved for paint touch ups and chip infills became available for the first time in years and governors could spend it on education, then they’d see the true worth of their investment.
